Different Types of Tahara In Islam

Islam commands goodness and beauty in all things, stresses the need for spiritual and physical cleanliness. Types of Taharah in Islam

Physical Tahara

The purpose of physical tahara or keeping our body, clothes and environment clean, is to avoid any items that religion considers Najs, or unclean. The messenger of Allah stated that prayer was the key to paradise, and purification is the key to prayer.

What is Najasah

  • You can get blood, urine, menses and Nifas (post-natal bleeding or post-menstrual bleeding) from any part of your body. All liquids that come out of the body’s private parts.
  • The urine and saliva of inedible animal, non-birds’ faeces, and all other animals’ blood.
  • Untanned skin and meat of a self-dead animal.
  • Pork, its bristles, and leather.
  • Khamr, intoxicating drinks.

Purification From Najasah

Purification from Najasah involves removing religiously-respect items such as Najs from the body, clothes and place where the prayer is being perform. It can also be done with water as follows:

Purification from Najasah can be done in many ways. However, water is the most important. Clean is define as an area that has been clean of dirt and traces, smells, or colours with water. 

Types Of Water for Purification

The water can be divided into two groups depending on whether it is natural or not. They can also be classified as either stagnant or flowing to determine their fluidity characteristics.

1. Mutlaq (pure) Water

These waters do not have any changes in their taste, smell, or colour. They are use to cleanse Najs items. These waters include rainwater, spring water, well water and sea water.

2. Mudhaf (mixed) Water

Mixing mudhaf water with pure elements like rosewater, fruit juice, or other pure elements is called Mudhaf. These waters can be purified only if there is not normal, pure water. They are not use to purify Hadath.

3. Stagnant Water

If dirt is find in stagnant water, it can no longer be consider a cleanser.

4. Flowing water

It is clean if the taste, color and smell of the stream waters do not change.

Purification From Hadath

We have two types of Tahara, the physical and the spiritual. The physical Tahara can be divide into two groups: Tahara from Najasah and Tahara form Hadath. It is now time to learn about the purification from Hadath.

Two types of Tahara of Hadath exist:

  • Minor Hadath (being free from wudu).
  • Major Hadath (being Junub and ending menstruation)

1. Wudu

In terms of spiritual and material cleanliness, ablution is a very important form of worship. Prophet Muhammad PBUH stated: “Listen carefully! Let me tell you about the acts through which Allah removes mistakes and raises your ranks. To perform wudu properly and fully, despite its difficulties, it is necessary to travel to mosque from a faraway place and wait for the next prayer after each prayer.” (Nasai).

2. Ghusl

Spiritual Taharah
